What is curcumin?
Curcumin is the bright orange-yellow compound found in the Curcuma Longa plant (also known as turmeric). This perennial plant is part of the ginger family and is native to Southeast Asia which is why it is traditionally used as a colourful spice in curries to give them a beautiful golden colour. Nowadays although the plant is still used as a spice in native dishes, the Curcumin is popular as a health supplement due to its many great health benefits as a superfood. One of the most well-known of these being that it is a rich natural source of vitamin D.
Turmeric and curcumin
Although these two are often confused and thought of as the same thing, they are slightly different. To be specific, turmeric is the plant whereas curcumin is the health benefitting compound found within the plant. The root of the turmeric plant typically contains around 2-5% of the this compound. This is why for those looking for the health benefits over the taste of the plant often prefer to take the extract which can be found more easily in health products such as supplements.
Curcumin health benefits
As it is considered a superfood it can have a number of potential super health benefits. Firstly, it is a rich natural source of vitamin D. This vitamin is important for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus which is said to contribute to the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. It may also aid the skin's immune system to help protect it from free radical damage which can lead to premature signs of ageing. Having a deficiency of vitamin D can also cause symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain and even possibly hair loss. The compound is also said to have anti-inflammatory properties which can aid some pain, redness and swelling within the body.
