What is Mangosteen?

A tropical evergreen tree, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia, it now grows all around Southeast Asia as well as in some areas of South America.

This valuable tree is related to the Garcinia gummi-gutta, famous for producing the superfood, Garcinia Cambogia. Similar in appearance to Garcinia Cambogia, Mangosteen fruit has the same small pumpkin like shape but it is a deep purple colour when ripe, not green/yellow.

Underneath the inedible rind is a juicy, fibrous white flesh that is said to have a unique taste that many describe as being sweet and tangy but at the same time, mild. Legend has it that Queen Victoria of England was so desperate to experience the joys of this superfruit that she reportedly offered a £100 reward for the person who could deliver it to her – some claim this is why Mangosteen fruit has gained the esteemed title, 'Queen of fruit'.

In the areas it grows, the flesh is enjoyed as a nutritious and delicious snack. Outside of these regions, the fruit is something of an exotic rarity and in the Western world the fruit has to be imported from places like Thailand.

Because of these air miles, Mangosteen fruit can be very expensive to buy fresh. You can get cheaper, canned versions but of course, when it's processed a lot of the unique flavour is lost and you certainly don't get the same health benefits. Aside from its intriguing flavour, Mangosteen fruit and the tree from which it is grown have been used for other things; the fruit has been used to treat wounds and infections and the wood of the tree has been used to make weapons including spears.

Diet supplements

While the flesh makes for a refreshing and delicious snack, it's actually the inedible, thick, purple peel of the Mangosteen fruit that contains more powerful properties.

Traditionally used in China to tan leather, the rind also contains natural phytochemicals that hold antioxidant properties. Not to let this goodness go to waste, our diet supplements use the entire fruit so that you get the most out of this wondrous superfruit.

Those who take this diet supplement daily could benefit from its antioxidants and it has also been shown to support the immune system and aid cardio maintenance.
