From the Amazon in Brazil, the Acai tree is famous for many things including its palms and its beautiful berry fruit. It's the berries that provide the basis of the increasingly popular supplement that hit the headlines (for all the right reasons) in 2004. Amongst other things, the berry contains powerful antioxidant properties and can be classed as a superfruit.

What are acai berries?

This special berry is the small, round, blacky purple soft fruit of the Euterpe oleracea, more commonly known as the 'acai palm'. This name is a Portuguese adaptation of the Tupian word ïwaca'i, which means, "fruit that cries or expels water". The trees this fruit grows on are native to both Central and South America as the swamplands and floodplains of these areas provide them with an ideal climate in which to flourish.

How is this tree and its fruit used?

In the areas it grows, the leaves are often made into useful items such as hats, mats and roof thatch for homes, while the wood of the acai berry palm tree - a natural pest repellent - is used in building and construction.

As well as having its practical uses, this tree is used for food. The trunk can be processed in order to yield minerals, and the palm heart is widely regarded as a delicacy. However, it is the berry itself that is used the most as a food source.

This wonderfully nutrient rich fruit can be enjoyed without any preparation, however, in lots of South American countries, fans of the berry freeze it and eat it with granola and oats for breakfast. Acai berry can also be pressed to make delicious juices and even alcoholic beverages – double the pleasure!

The importance of this superfruit should not be underestimated - one study discovered that three traditional Caboclo populations in the Brazilian Amazon featured acai berry as a major part of their diet, making up over 40% of everything they ate. This could well be because the fruit has since been shown to offer a rich source of vitamins A and C, as well as a mix of powerful antioxidants, iron and amino acids.

Antioxidants in Acai Berries

It is well known that acai berry are full of antioxidants but and what do they do? Technically, antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation. Oxidation is the chemical reaction that happens in the body that produces free radicals, which are essentially molecules that can cause damage to cells. This cellular damage can impact our cells in different way. Two examples is that for our skin cellular damage can be a big cause of premature ageing and for our brain it can damage our brain cells and reduce their optimum function.

Free radicals creation in the body can be caused by a number of different factors. This includes environmental factors such as smoking, pollution, radiation and herbicides. They can also be purposely created by the body in order to help fight viruses and bacteria. Although many of us try, these make it incredibly hard to avoid free radicals all together as we can come across environmental factors without even realising and we can’t tell our bodies to stop if it is trying to protect us from harmful bacteria. Antioxidants therefore, are essential for the body in order to balance and neutralise the potentially damaging effects of free radicals.

Antioxidants can be found naturally in many fruits such as goji berries, blueberries and cranberries and also other types of foods such as dark chocolate, kidney beans and pecans. Although antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods, acai berry antioxidants are favoured for those looking for a boost due to the rich density of antioxidants in the berries as well as their other health benefits.

Does acai berry work for weight loss?

Whilst there is never going to be a magic pill you can take and lose 10 pounds in an instant, there are many natural superfoods out there that can aid you on your weight loss journey in different ways. Whilst acai berry isn’t famed for their potential fat burning abilities in the same way as other superfoods such as raspberry ketones, there are still ways in which acai can help with weight loss.

As already explained, antioxidants are very important for the health of the body. But they can also play a part in our weight. If our body is full of toxins and impurities it can often stop our body from working at full function. This is especially important in body parts such as our liver and digestive system. This could then affect our weight as it can slow down our metabolism and the bodys function for burning fat.

Acai supplements in particular can be the most ideal form of acai for weight loss as they can provide a high quality amount of acai extract but without the calories that come with adding acai to other foods such as yoghurts and porridge. In supplement form they can also often offer a higher strength so can be the best choice for those looking to use acai to aid their weight.
