What is water retention?
Also known as fluid retention, this is when there is a buildup of liquid in the circulatory system, body tissues, or cavities in the body and most commonly seen in the face, hands, legs and feet. Although around 70% of the body is made up of water, it is possible for the body to be holding too much of it. This results in swelling, bloating and stiffness and can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. It can also result in weight gain as the body can store up to a massive 4.5 litres of extra fluid. There can be many causes for excess water retention in the body including too much sodium (salt), an underactive lifestyle, hormones and certain medication (such as blood pressure and antidepressant medications). This is why it can be important to reduce the water retention in the body and one of the best way to do this is by using a natural diuretic.
What is a natural diuretic?
Diuretics or 'water-pills' help to reduce water retention by pressuring the kidneys to expel excess water, salt and unwanted toxins out of the body through your urine. Diuretics are commonly used for those whose body cannot regulate water correctly or those who are suffering from swelling and bloating due to fluid retention. For more serious illnesses diuretics can be prescribed by a doctor, but they can often have serious side effects that must be taken into consideration. For those that are suffering with bloating or discomfort, a natural diuretic could be a safe and simple option.
There are many ingredients such as dandelion and vitamin B6 that are commonly used in natural diuretic formulas that can help with expelling excess water from the body. When looking for a natural supplement it is best to select one that has a variety of diuretic ingredients as well as plant-based ingredients that can help to replenish and restore the body after the excess water has been expelled. It is also recommended that you choose one that is made from completely natural ingredients and no artificial fillers or binders in order to reduce the possibility of unwanted side effects.
