Coconut oil is the oil extracted from the meat of fresh and mature coconuts (the white fleshy part). The coconut oil used here is cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil. Being cold pressed means that it is not heated when the oil is extracted. Although this means less oil is extracted per coconut, the oil that is extracted is of a higher quality as it keeps the nutrients preserved.
Coconut oil contains fatty acids including lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. In the past it was often criticised for these fatty acids as it was thought that these contributed to weight gain. Newer studies however have shown that it contains medium chain fatty acids that instead of being stored in the body are used as energy. Since then the popularity of coconut oil has increased dramatically and more and more uses for the diverse oil have been found making it as popular as ever.
When coconut oil is refined, it means it has undergone a process to dry the coconut. The dried coconut is then purified with bleaching clays and then a high heat is used to deodorise the coconut oil, which removes its unique flavour and delicious scent. Other ingredients are then commonly added in order to help reserve the oils shelf life.
Unrefined or virgin coconut oil is made in a more pure and natural way. It is made from fresh coconut meat instead of dried and is quick dried meaning it does not need to be bleached or have any additives added. They can also be cold-pressed so are not exposed to high heat so therefore retain their favour, scent and nutrients.
Natural Energy Source –Organic coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids that are not stored as fat in the body, but on the other hand is burned as energy.
Supporting the Immune System – The antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties of coconut oil make it great for the immune system and to help protect the body from harmful bacteria and viruses.
Increased Metabolism - Cold-pressed coconut oil can help to activate your thyroid gland, which can increase your metabolism. By increasing the metabolism you can help to promote fat burning, which can overall result in weight loss.
Calorie Burning - The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil has a major impact on how many calories you can potentially burn. Studies have shown that if you take 15-30 grams of coconut oil you can burn up to 5% more calories per day.
