What is coconut sugar?
Coconut sugar (also called coconut palm sugar) is a healthy sugar alternative that is made from the palm of the coconut (not to be confused with palm sugar which is made from a different type of palm tree). To make the sugar, the liquid sap is collected from the flower of the coconut palm and then heated and boiled down so that the water evaporates. This makes it a 100% natural sugar that does not contain any chemicals, flavourings or preservative as is made completely from the sap of the coconut flower. This makes it a great natural alternative to traditional sugar and is what gives it a delicious sweet taste.
What are the benefits of using coconut sugar?
Coconut sugar is considered as healthier than regular sugar for many reasons. The first of which is its low glycaemic index. This is important for health and especially for diabetics as it means it has less of an effect on the blood sugar levels. Regular sugar has a GI value of 92 meaning it can cause a spike in blood sugar levels which could be dangerous for diabetics. Coconut sugar however has a GI value of only 35, meaning it will not affect the blood sugar levels as much, making it far safer.
Another great advantage of coconut sugar is that it is not just empty calories; coconut sugar is packed full of vitamins and minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc and vitamins B1, B2, B3 & B6. It also contains a higher level of dietary fibre making it useful for maintaining good functioning of the digestive system and is low in fat. Overall this means that by using coconut sugar instead of regular white sugar, you can have more enjoyment but with less guilt!
