What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the ‘orange peel’ effect that is commonly found on the stomach, bum and thighs. Cellulite appears when underlying fat deposits push through the thin connective tissues and result in the bumpy effect of cellulite. This can happen when either the fat deposits under the skin become too large or because the connective tissue becomes too thin or weak.
Cellulite is an issue that more commonly affects women but doesn’t mean that mean can’t find themselves with dreaded orange peel. Many assume that if you have cellulite then you are overweight but that is not always necessarily true. Of course being overweight is a big factor in the formation of cellulite but there are many other things that can affect your skin.
What can cause cellulite?
There are many different factors that can both cause cellulite to form as well as affect the amount of cellulite you have on your body.
Diet - What we eat day to day is one of the biggest causes of cellulite. Those with a diet high in fat, carbohydrates or salt are more likely to develop cellulite.
Lifestyle - How we live can affect of bodies and things such as exercise levels and smoking can contribute.
Hormones - Hormonal imbalance is a common cause of cellulite in many people and can be an explanation for those that eat well but still have cellulite.
Genetics - Although it is not guaranteed, certain genes may be passed down which make your body and skin more susceptible to forming cellulite.
Clothing - Wearing clothing and underwear that is tight to the skin limits the blood flow and can contribute to the formation of cellulite.
Dehydration - When you’re dehydrated your body lacks vital nutrients which help keep your skin strong and smooth so may be a big contribution to cellulite.
